Selling my cookie jars where should I go?
I have a large collection of coookie jars and wish to sell them, But I do not want to go to Ebay, where else can I sell them?
I'm certainly not an expert, - but here are some Ideas that might help to get you started in the right direction. Like any interest or hobby, pass-time, or craft today; if more that one person is interested in it - some one is publishing a magazine about it, and another person is an "expert appraiser" of the item(s), and still another is a collector of what the first person makes. If there are two of the later - then there is more value to the creations of the first persons art. If there are a lot of collectors, the prices of the creators art goes up with the demand.
1. So the first thing I recommend is that you find the Catalog or Magazine on Cookie Jar's - which identifies them as to genre, period, makers, style, commercial value, age, desireability, number produced, association with a special or historical event, regional appeal, association with Politics, the Movie Industry, Cartoon characters, History, and so forth. Next check for damage, and original pieces - missing parts; damage, and replaced parts, (such as non-original lids), can greatly de-value the worth of these collectables.
2. Learn as much about each of your pieces as you can. Try to establish as much of a "Providence" on any piece that you own as you can - especially if it is of some Historic note or some how associated with a Person of some Celebrity.
3. Next. Try to locate three certified and recognized appraisers, to evaluate and price each item in your collection, and to also advise you on how to best market them for a sale. Should some be sold separately? Should some be sold in separate lots, should some be sold in a jumble? Which ones should be sold as a grouping. What should a reserve be on the more valuable of your cookie jars? Or worse comes to worse, are you better off donating them to Good-Will, and claiming the Value of each at $ 10.00 - $ 15.00 and taking a tax credit? (Just Because something is old or has been in some one's collection does NOT mean that it has any commercial (marketable) value.
Do not tell any of the 3 appraisers about the other appraisers visits or prices or comments. What you are interested in is how close they are on everything, and how far off they are on the same items. It's the Items that their pricing seems to be all over the place on that really interests me.
I had a rather large and very decorative Majorica Jardinare and stand that I had 4 different apprasiers put values on, as I was going to aution with it, and a number of other estate antiques. The quotes I got ranged from $ 2 - 400.00, $ 3- 500.00, $ 5 -600.00 and $ 650.00 - $800.00. Not very close - a $ 400.00 spread. Turns out the Jardinaire & Base we more popular that was expected - and they went for $ 11,500.00. Point is, even the best appraisers can be off, the aution price could have been $ 200.00 just as easily. But at least you have a well educated guess on what you should expect to get for your goods.
4. Don't know where to find appraisers that are what they say they are? Go to you local Auction House. (Look for one that specializes in Estate sales, pottery, furniture, house hold goods, dish sets, silver service - etc. Many Auctioneers are also certified appraisers. They also can put you in touch with people who can appraise your goods - such as antique shop owners.
While you are at the Auctioneers, as how their auction works, and what their fees and comissions are, - if you were to have them sell your cookie jar collection? Most of the time you are looking at a 10 % sellers fee. In other words if they sold your collection for $ 1,000.00; then their fee of 10% would be $ 100.00 from your proceeds. The also collect a sales commision fee from the buyer at probably 15% ; which nets them $ 150.00, for a total of 25 % of the sale cost of $ 1,000.00. Not a bad cut.
Whatever else you do, DO NO APPEAR ANXIOUS TO BE RID OF YOU COLLECTION. Appear to be conflicted, like your are thinking of "Moving out of the "Home Place" now that Earl is gone on, (Bless his soul), to a smaller place like her sister has down in 'Boca." " You know one of those Con-do-mini-mums." "Cause you wanted to give the collection to you're new darling twin grandbaby girls - something to remember Great-grandma by, But they do take up a lot of space and April and Clay don't have a big house - what with the other three kids, and now the twins". So mebbe, it was time to just let them all go . . "
Well, I hope this helpedl LOL and I'm pulling for you.

Collectible cookie jars
Cookie jars are wonderful ceramic and glass jars that are used for decoration. In America and Canada however, they are mostly used to store cookies and the people in the United Kingdom actually call it biscuit jars. As the name implies, the jars are used to store biscuits and other similar cookies in the United Kingdom. But the cookie jars do not have strict use like say the kettle. They are used throughout the world to store cookies, biscuits, candies, dog treats and even money in some places.
Collectible cookie jars have a wonderful history. They have been used in England and the United Kingdom in whole for close to three centuries now. In those times, they were often made with glass and metal lids were used to cover it. However during the Great Depression in America in 1929, the jars found their way into the United States. As expected, America added another twist to the way the jars were made by developing the ceramic version of the jar. The first company in history to manufacture the ceramic cookie jar was the Brush Pottery Company in Zanesville, Ohio.
So if you are collecting antique cookie jar, you have to know that none of the ceramic jars out there is up to 100 years. So the really unique antiques are the glass cookie jars that were used in the United Kingdom. However you can also scout around for some of the earliest made ceramic cookie jars out there. Before you give money out with the aim of getting one of these antiques, make sure you really know what you are buying. If you are not sure, these collectible cookie jars are available here to buy.
